When you look at my picture what do you see? If you’ve only met me a few times, what have you thought of my attitude or way of being? I bet you wouldn’t believe that only 5 years ago I was diagnosed with Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis, 8 years ago I was diagnosed with early stage Parkinson’s disease, or that I struggled with acid reflux, respiratory illnesses like bronchitits and strep throat, chronic candida, and bacterial infections for over 10 years. Would you believe that I held a degree in genetics and studied nutrition at UC Davis, but in the past never drank water, was addicted to sugar, ate one meal a day, and took pills for insomnia?

Yes, I’ve come a long way and through my experiences I’ve gained immense awareness and knowledge to help others overcome issues like I’ve had.  I haven’t been sick in years because I now understand the connection between the immune system aka our gut, and our diets, as well as other environmental exposures that can be putting your health at risk.   When my body became resistant to prescription pills, sprays, inhalers, creams, and potions I decided to hire the best naturopathic doctors and nutritionists and dive into research myself; to begin healing the root cause of my horrible afflictions – those that were the cause and those that surfaced as an effect.

I was reintroduced to fitness and nutrition and the lowest point in my health, and they truly saved me.  What started as a cry for help has become a passion that has allowed me to, with confidence, grace the pages of national magazines, internationally recognized tv shows, and competitive stages where I earned my IFBB pro status. I coach brides, new mothers, winning fitness competitors, athletes, world famous actors and artists and business moguls.  I am the healthiest I have ever been and I’ve experimented with many diets including vegan, pollo/pescatarian, GAPS, SCD, raw and those free of dairy, gluten, sugar, alcohol, yeast, vinegar, nightshades and starch. I’ve lost weight, gained it back, and lost it many times over. I’ve redefined my relationship with food, I’ve taken my life back, and I’m living my life the way it was designed for me to live. Let me help you do the same!

Hi! I’m Tamara White the Director of Marketing for Soma Fitness.

Learn how I lost 20 pounds and competed in national bodybuilding competitions while working in a demanding public relations career and traveling constantly.

Soma Fitness will teach you how to lose the weight without spending hours in the gym and hating your life!

It all started in 2008. I was a stressed out, overweight work-a-holic in my late 20s. I had been active my entire life but with a crazy work and travel schedule the last thing I wanted to do at the end of the day was work out or cook. Instead, I grabbed some Chinese take out and had a glass of wine or three. I was sick a lot, my asthma flared up constantly which lead to respiratory infections and the occasional bout of pneumonia but a trip to the doctor and a round of antibiotics had me up and going in no time – until the next bout.

A trip to Thailand with my sister and a couple friends changed my life. I had an amazing time in Thailand but my stomach was so round, that I didn’t want to look at any of the photos from the trip, let alone show anyone else. Even now this makes me sad, because Thailand is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever traveled, but I keep those photos locked away because I can’t stand the sight of them! Since my early 20s I’ve had an issue with fat accumulating on my mid-section (even when I was in training for a marathon) so wearing a bikini was an act of courage back then. What I know now is this is a sign of high cortisol from stress, and it causes weight loss to be really tough.

After Thailand, I decided I needed to make a major change. One of my friends that was on the Thailand trip was prepping to compete in her first NPC Bikini show. After seeing her in a skimpy bikini I said to myself “No matter what it takes – I want to look like that!”

I started working with a competition trainer and completely changed my diet and cut out alcohol. I competed in NPC Bikini shows almost non-stop for two and a half years. It was really fun, but towards the end of my career on the stage I was burnt out on dieting. And it just got more tough as I was now flying to New York City every other weekend dating someone new (my current boyfriend).

After I stopped competing my weight went up. And it kept going up. My bad habits of overworking, drinking wine and binge eating came back. At my heaviest I gained 30 pounds from my competition weight! I told myself that it wasn’t a big deal that I could lose it whenever I wanted. And the worst part is that I was ALWAYS tired. So I slammed caffeine all day. Eventually, I got really concerned about my health and went to several doctors to figure out what was going on and why I was so tired all the time.

It took a really long time before the doctor’s were able to diagnose me. I have something called sub-clinical hypothyroidism and hyporeninemic hypoaldosteronism. What this means is I have low renin and low aldosterone, and my thyroid thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of certain important hormones. Even though my low thyroid functioning was causing all types of issues like fatigue, depression and constipation – doctors were reluctant to treat me because my test results weren’t bad enough! I was told to increase the amount of sea salt in my diet to combat my low aldesterone levels so I wouldn’t experience dizziness and low blood pressure. This helped but I still struggled with extreme fatigue from the thyroid issue.

During this time, I started working with Summer to figure out the best diet to help heal me. We worked on repairing my gut and controlling my sweet tooth which had reemerged with a vengeance. I also started taking a mixture of herbs to support my thyroid and adrenals.

By adjusting my diet, lowering my stress levels, meditating and doing moderate exercise I’ve been able to normalize my weight, regain some of my energy, and slowly get back to the activities I love. What I’ve learned is that when your weight fluctuates constantly – pay attention. It isn’t always about will power. This is your bodies way of telling that something is going on.

Just because you have a health set back doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your life and keep your weight in check! With proper nutrition I was able to lose 20 pounds in a few months while creating a business I love!
